WASHINGTON - An estimated 40,620 New Yorkers can thank the federal economic stimulus legislation enacted in February for saving or creating their jobs, the White House announced Friday.
That's about 6 percent of the 640,329 jobs created or saved to date nationwide by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The long-awaited report, touted by the administration as an unprecedented effort to measure the impact of the stimulus on the American economy, is based on reporting by state governments, school districts, municipalities, universities and private companies awarded contracts under the legislation. Details are posted at www.recovery.gov.
According to the administration, about 325,000 education jobs and 80,000 construction jobs were created or saved. In New York, many school districts avoided layoffs after getting federal money from a state fiscal stabilization fund.
"These reports are strong confirmation that the Recovery Act is responsible for over 1 million jobs so far, and we are on track to create and save 3.5 million jobs through the Recovery Act by the end of next year," Vice President Joe Biden said in a statement.
Republican congressional leaders, however, said the jobs numbers were far below the Obama administration's January projections. And the nation's jobless rate - which was 9.8 percent in September and may top 10 percent by the end of the year - has surpassed the 8 percent ceiling that the White House originally forecast.
